Total MBBS Seats in India
MBBS in India is a lucrative career option for the students who have chosen to study science after senior secondary. Every year lakhs of Indian students will register for the NEET UG to get a medical seat in India and this is why, they wonder, “How many total MBBS seats are there in India?”. At present, there are 91,927 MBBS seats in 612 medical colleges and out of these, 48012 seats are government, while the 43915 seats are in private MBBS colleges in India. The total number of 48012 MBBS seats are offered in 322 government medical colleges.
For the BDS, currently, there are 26,949 seats open for the students. These seats are granted after the NEET counselling for which further dates are announced by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC). Barring few states, every state has All India Quota of 15% for the outstation candidates. For 15% AIQ Counselling, MCC will release the seat matrix before every round on the official website. For the rest of the 85% state quota seats, respective authorities will release the seat matrix.
For the year 2023 too, to get into the medical colleges, institutes for MBBS or BDS or AYUSH or BVSc courses, there will be only a single entrance test, i.e. NEET. The same merit list will also be accepted by AIIMs and JIPMER as they no longer conduct their own medical entrance test and uses the NEET UG merit list for the allotment of the seats in their MBBS and BDS courses.
Just for the information, Tamil Nadu has the maximum number of medical seats 10,725 followed by Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh with 10,145 and 9,053 seats respectively for both the Government and Private medical colleges.
NEET or National Eligibility cum Entrance Test is a single Entry level national exam carried out by National Testing Agency for medical aspirants to seek admissions to medical courses across different medical institutes of the country.

NEET Seat Matrix: Highlights
NEET UG seats are divided into 2 quotas, i.e. All India Quota and State Level Quota
The 15% All India Quota seats are allotted via the centralized counselling procedure.
For the rest of the State Level Quota seats, State Conducted counselling procedure is followed.
All the Deemed Medical Colleges, Private Colleges, Armed Forces Medical College as well BHU, and Aligarh Muslim University also participate in NEET 2023 medical and other related courses seats allotment.
The same NEET UG merit list will also be used for seat allotment to veterinary colleges in order to complete the BVSc and Animal Husbandry undergraduate coursework under 15% AIQ.

As per the official website’s data, for the next Academic session, 63 new Government and 26 private medical colleges have been granted approval for MBBS course admissions. So, there are 7025 Seats in Government medical colleges and 3850 seats in private medical colleges across India.
As of now (January 2023) there are 650 medical colleges in India and Out of these, 355 are Government and Semi- Government medical colleges, AIIMS and Central Medical Universities and 295 are Private Medical Colleges and Deemed Universities.
If we talked about total number of MBBS seats, there are 99163 MBBS seats (52048 in Govt. Medical Colleges and 47115 in Private and Deemed medical colleges).
